Ferrari and Lamborghini? Forget it. They are not even among the top 10.
The Italian giants have never constructed a racing car that dominated the races for years.
The image is there, as well as the masterpieces they produce. But true racing legends are coming from France and Germany. The Italians have their trump as well, but it is neither a prancing horse nor a bull.
This is an overview of the five most successful racing cars in history.
5. BMW M3 (E30)
The most desirable car in the world. We’re not talking just about the original every M3 has that mythical status.
The original E30, produced in 1985, has created this legend. From 1987 to 1993 he dominated all over the world.
He has won numerous Touring Championships, from Australia to Europe. At 24 hours of Nürburgring; he was untouchable, as well as at Spa Francorchamps. He even won the rally races.
Favorite racing beast of numerous teams…
4. PORSCHE 956/962
The Porsche twins won the 24 hours of Le Mans in their debut in 1982, as well as in their last race 12 years later.
That’s how long they’ve lasted. And here’s a fact; in 1983, an amazing number of nine Porsche cars were among the top 10. Only the Sauber / BMW squeezed in to a ninth position.
The engine 2.65 twin-turbo developed 750 hp so the power was not lacking.
And these are just successes at Le Mans, German twins dominated from Japan to America, and kept a record at Nürburgring as well.
3. LANCIA DELTA-GROUP A
‘Italian Wizard’ is one of the most desirable cars even today. It is a proud of every garage and every owner.
He gained glory on the heaviest tracks, those of the World Rally Championship. From 1987 to 1992, Lancia won six constructive titles in a row and a legend was created.
Ford, BMW, Mazda, Renault and Ford invested huge amounts of money, but Lancia remained at the top.
2. PORSCHE 911
There is probably no car that has won as many different races and surfaces. Wherever 911 appeared, it was the first to cross the finish line, or the fastest.
The list is unbelievable, the Porsche 911 won the Monegasque Rally, won the world’s toughest car race Paris-Dakar, there are also celebrations at 24 hours of Daytona, 24 hours of Le Mans, 12 hours of Sebring, numerous GT competitions …
All the prestigious races … But such is the Porsche 911, prestigious and legendary.
1. BUGATTI TYPE 35
There is not a more successful racing car in the history of cars. Bugatti Type 35 has won over 1000 races. Beware, 1000 races. However, some sources mention more than 1500.
In 1924, Ettore Bugatti constructed a car that would make him a legend. Two years later, the first victory came, and after that, all other were one step behind the 35. A total of 400 were produced.
At its peak Type 35 ran14 races a week on average. Just like Porsche 911, there are no surfaces and races the legendary 35 hasn’t won.
Ettore Bugatti knew how to make a top car, his only flaw was the fact that ha was always late with innovations. While the hydraulic brakes were standard, Bugatti’s cars were still braked by cables.
There is a legend saying that one customer complained about the insufficient braking performance, and Ettore just shook his hand.
– I create cars to drive not stop.
